Letters to Prof. William R. Dudley of Stanford University pertaining to the creation of Pinnacles National Monument in San Benito County, California; and photographs of the area. Correspondents include local residents S. C. Hain and L. W. Jefferson, Congressman James C. Needham, Senator George C. Perkins, J. H. Fimple of the Dept. of the Interior, and Gifford Pinchot. The photographs were possibly taken by L. W. Jefferson and are annotated.

James Carson Needham, born 17 September 1864 in Nevada, was raised in northern California. He received his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1889 and practiced law in Modesto, California. In 1899 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and served until 1913. From 1919-1935 he served as judge of the Superior Court in Modesto and from 1922-1928 he also served as president of the Newman Oil Company. Needham died in Modesto in 1942.
